If your financial situation was different when you got engaged, or your tastes have simply changed, you might be considering an engagement ring upgrade. Whether it’s the center stone’s carat weight you want to increase, or if you plan on resetting your current diamond in a new band, an upgrade can alter the look of your ring in a way that still feels meaningful and personal. Here are some celebrities who have upgraded their engagement rings.
Bethenny Frankel got engaged in 2009, to Jason Hoppy. Initially, the reality star wore a 6.5-carat pear-shaped diamond, flanked by two trillion-cut diamonds on the side. Just before their second anniversary, Bethenny made a TV appearance wearing a pear-shaped double halo ring with a split-shank band. She was also spotted at times wearing a large diamond wedding ring on her left hand, without the pear-shaped stone. Some women like to have a few different pieces that they mix and match depending on the day and occasions.
Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe married her husband Roger in 1996, originally wearing an emerald-cut engagement ring with baguette side stones. When Rachel gave birth to their son in 2011, Roger presented her with a 10-carat cushion-cut halo ring, which she now wears on her left hand’s ring finger. Another cushion-cut halo ring has been spotted on Rachel’s hand, this one with a split-shank and pavé setting. It’s possible that this was a second push present, to celebrate the birth of the couple’s second son in 2013.
Carmelo Anthony surprised his wife La La with a 20-carat oval-cut diamond halo ring on her birthday, in 2012. La La said, “This summer will make nine years that my husband and I have been together total. He just wanted to do something special and I appreciate it.” La La’s first engagement ring was an 8-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, which she wore from 2004 onwards.
To celebrate their first anniversary, Chad Kroeger surprised Avril Lavigne with a 17-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring. The ‘Sk8r Boi’ singer’s original engagement ring is a 14-carat pear-shaped engagement ring. Chad presented her with another 20-carat diamond ring on their wedding day, in the summer of 2013. Diamonds are obviously Avril’s best friend!
Spice Girl and X Factor judge Mel B got an engagement ring upgrade worth $30,000 in November 2014. Explains Mel, “Every couple of years he gets me an upgrade…it’s so gorgeous, I absolutely love it.” The pair have been married since 2007; Mel has been pictured wearing fancy yellow diamond rings and cushion halo engagement rings in the past.
Victoria Beckham is the Spice Girl most renowned for her engagement ring collection, however. The singer turned fashion designer is believed to be the owner of at least 13 diamond and gemstone engagement rings, gifts from her husband David over the 16 years of their marriage. She originally wore a marquise diamond engagement ring.
Engagement ring upgrades don’t necessarily have to be a brand new ring or diamond. When Ugly Betty star Rebecca Romijn became pregnant, she worked with a jewelry designer to alter the setting on her yellow gold ring, for a more comfortable fit. Her yellow diamond used to have a classic halo setting, but is now attached to the band in a unique way that allows it to move and catch the light.
